What it is
Volume is the amount of space a solid takes up, measured in cubic units.
Why it matters
Before a shipment leaves the warehouse, someone has to know whether the boxes actually fit in the truck. That's volume, and stacking unit cubes is what turns length times width times height into counting.
How to do it
- Rectangular prism: length × width × height.
- Cube: edge × edge × edge.
- Keep all measurements in the same unit.
Examples by level
- BeginnerVolume of the triangular prism =Answer48 cm³
- IntermediateVolume of the triangular prism =Answer40 cm³
- AdvancedFind the volume of the cube =Answer1000 cm³
Examples are generated by the same engine as the worksheets, so they're always mathematically correct. Built to avoid repeats, not reshuffle the same handful of questions.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying only two dimensions.
- Mixing units.
- Using square units instead of cubic units.
Tips
- Volume uses cubic units (cm³).
- Multiply all three dimensions.
For parents
Think of filling the box with unit cubes, length × width gives one layer, times height gives all the layers.
For teachers
Build a prism from unit cubes so 'layers' makes the formula intuitive.
Key vocabulary
- volume
- space inside a solid, in cubic units
- prism
- a solid with matching ends
